If your new pressure-treated deck went in this summer, the honest answer to "when can I stain it" is not a date on the calendar. Most pressure-treated lumber needs three to six months to dry out enough to accept stain, though that range depends heavily on the wood, the weather, and how much sun the deck gets. In hot, dry conditions, some decks are ready in as little as two to six weeks. Kiln-dried-after-treatment (KDAT) lumber is different again: it can technically be stained immediately, though waiting one to two months still gives a better result. If you are not sure which kind of lumber your deck was built with, the calendar guess is exactly why testing the wood itself, not counting weeks, is the right approach (see below). Once the wood is actually dry enough, the second condition is temperature, and this is where a lot of generic online advice quietly stops being useful for a Niagara backyard. Most exterior wood stains need an air and surface temperature of at least 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) at application, and that temperature has to hold for the stain to cure properly, not just for the hour you are applying it. Manufacturer guidance is direct on this: surface temperatures need to stay above the minimum until the stain is completely cured, including overnight temperatures, and a cold night during that cure window can cause the coating to peel or crack instead of hardening. That is the real reason a June-built deck can end up in a squeeze. Its three-month mark lands in September, which is usually fine. Its six-month mark lands in December, when Niagara overnight temperatures are reliably well below 10 degrees and staining is not a realistic option until spring. The wait time and the cure-temperature window are two separate constraints, and a deck that finally dries out in late October or November can still be too cold to stain safely that same year. The calendar is a rough guide only. The test that actually tells you whether your deck is ready is the wood itself, and there are two ways to check it. The simplest is the water-bead test: sprinkle a few drops of water onto the wood. If the water beads up and sits on the surface, the wood is still too wet and needs more time. If it soaks in within about five to ten minutes, the wood is dry enough to accept stain. The more precise option is a moisture meter, an inexpensive tool that reads the wood's actual moisture content directly -- most stain manufacturers want that reading at 15 percent or lower before you apply anything. Test more than one board before you decide: a board that gets full sun most of the day will typically dry out faster than one that stays shaded, so one dry-feeling spot does not mean the whole deck is ready. What happens if you skip the test and stain too soon: the stain sits on top of the wood's trapped moisture instead of bonding into the fibers, which is exactly the failure mode manufacturers warn about for a cold, uncured application too -- the finish can peel, crack, or blotch instead of protecting the wood, and there is no fix for that short of stripping it back and starting over once it is dry.
