Fencing in Ontario generally runs about $40-$95 per linear foot depending on material. Wood privacy fencing commonly runs $28-$60 per linear foot, and a high-end build with 6x6 posts and full pressure-treated privacy boards lands around $68-$75 per linear foot. A 6 ft chain-link fence commonly runs $25-$38 per linear foot. A 100-linear-foot wood privacy fence often comes in around $4,000-$6,500 all-in. These are wide 2026 marketing-content ranges. We do not have a Niagara-Falls-specific fence price figure, so we are not making one up. Length, height, terrain, gates and material set your real number, and an on-site estimate is the way to get it.
In Niagara Falls a fence is a by-law question, not usually a building-permit question. The City says it plainly on its own Fences page: "You do not need a building permit to construct a fence unless you install a swimming pool or replace an existing pool enclosure." What does apply is Fence By-law 2005-70, as amended by By-law 2017-69, and it is mostly about height. The confirmed maximum is 2.5 m (about 8'2") in the rear yard and 1 m (about 3.28 ft) along the front-yard side. On a corner lot, expect lower, not higher. Section 5 caps any fence within 9 m of a highway intersection at 75 cm above the grade of the adjacent road, and every other height rule in the by-law is subject to it. In the City's words, "The height is lower in front yards and corner lots so that vehicles and pedestrians can be seen." Section 7 has one corner-lot detail: in the rear yard of a corner lot, the run of fence beside a neighbour's front yard can go to 2.5 m, where on an interior lot that run is held to 1 m, and the 75 cm limit near the intersection still applies. The City's Fences page also notes that the by-law "does not have rules for the minimum distance that should be set back from the shared property line." If a published figure does not fit your lot, section 2 lets the Chief Building Official grant a minor variance. The decision comes in writing with reasons, goes to you and to every owner who shares the fence, takes effect after 30 days, and can be appealed to Council within 30 days. The fee is $315.00 under the City's Schedule of Fees effective January 1, 2026. Sharing the cost with a neighbour is where Niagara Falls differs from St. Catharines. Ontario's Line Fences Act applies here: the fence by-law contains no opt-out, and the City's Fences page sends readers to the Act ("For more information, check the Line Fences Act"). For a fence built on the boundary line, the Act's default is that each owner pays one-half, unless the fence-viewers' award splits it differently. St. Catharines has opted out of the Act, so the answer on our St. Catharines fence page does not carry over to a Niagara Falls yard. The notice-to-the-clerk process is laid out step by step in /fence-bylaw-guide/. Two approvals can come before any of that. Under Ontario Regulation 41/24, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) must approve a fence in a wetland, within 30 m of one, in a river or stream valley, or on certain other hazard lands, and a solid privacy fence has no exemption. On a lot inside the Niagara Escarpment Plan area, the Niagara Escarpment Commission is a separate check. Last, before any post hole is dug, by our crew or by you, Ontario law requires a free locate request through Ontario One Call. The Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act, 2012 treats anyone who digs as an "excavator" (s.1) and makes the request free (s.5.1(4)). Skipping it can bring a fine of up to $10,000 (s.18). We book the locate before the post holes go in.
Most Niagara Falls fence calls come down to two materials, and Peter builds both. Wood privacy fencing gives you a solid, natural-looking screen and costs more per foot. Like any exterior wood here it needs re-staining or sealing every few years to hold up. Chain link costs less per foot and needs almost no upkeep, but it does not give you privacy.
